Artist: Cami aka Saturn

Saturnalia

I started my jewelry journey while in quarantine during peak pandemic 2020. I started with a small collection of pendants made from flowers and bugs I’d collected over the past ~7 years, and got a lot of great feedback from folks at local events I’d vend at. It’s been awesome to see my collection, interests, and skillsets grow with each piece. Each item is uniquely handmade with so much love and care with the ultimate goal of putting a smile on someone else’s face. My art has come a long way since 2020 and I truly feel like I’m just getting started.

Social Impact

My goal is sustainability. I only buy my crystals from local fair trade suppliers. I use stainless steel for my jewelry pieces so they’re hypoallergenic and long-lasting. I only use small amounts of resin when making my own pendants. All the bugs, bones, flowers, shells etc. are found objects from my own adventures, so I encase them myself. I use a variety of metal chains and wires for my suncatchers. Everything else is either glass, crystal/stone, or upcycled materials (keychains, junk jewelry, other accessories). My goal is to breathe new life into mundane or forgotten objects. I’ll pick up a dead ladybug off the sidewalk, or stop someone from throwing something away, just so I can turn it into wearable art. There’s already so much excess and waste on the planet, so the less new stuff I have to buy, the better for everyone. I can keep my prices reasonable and feel better about my footprint.

Creative Process

I don’t really have much of a calculated process, I kinda just sit down at my messy desk and try my best to pick up where I left off on one piece or get started on another. Once I get started on a piece, it’s pretty impossible to take me out of that flow zone. I’ll go on for hours without noticing until my fingertips are calloused from bending and twisting so much metal.
