Vonda Lee Cosmetics

During the process of my research, my aunt was battling a rare cancer. In hopes of maintaining her legacy, and making her proud, I decided to name my product line after her: Vonda Lee Cosmetics.

My aunt was a beautiful, confident, energetic woman who felt nothing but love for everyone she met. She often went out of her way to help those in need, and dedicated most of her time inspiring others to be as optimistic as she. Her personality attracted everyone.

Though she is no longer physically able to share her beauty with the world, she is making it a better place, in spirit. Vonda Lee Cosmetics is a celebration of her originality, intelligence, beauty, and everlasting optimism.

All of Vonda Lee Cosmetics is for her, and our family.

About the Artist

Artist Background

From the time I was 7 years old until I was 15 years old, I had Locs in my hair. This style is more commonly known as “dreadlocks”, the reason for which is relevant and impactful. Something good to research for those who are interested.

During that time, I used a deluge of store bought and self made methods to ensure that my Locs stayed healthy and moisturized, including Hot Oil Treatments using mainly olive oil or coconut oil, and other random (food grade) ingredients as I saw fit.

When I was 18, a few years after taking out my Locs, I was working as an assistant at a hair salon.  At this point in time, my hair would not grow and had been damaged from not knowing how to properly care for my hair. Especially since most of my life, I hadn’t had to do anything except attending bi-weekly loc maintenance appointments. I got the idea from Pinterest and old Loc habits to make an extra special hot oil treatment recipe for my hair, which was struggling to say the least.

I brought my concoction to my stylist to use on me and she insisted that I was on to something, and had to bring her more. I spent the next couple of months researching plants/herbs, carrier oils and essential oils and their benefits of their properties on the hair and skin.

After more extensive research and multiple recipe trials, I was able to create unique blends of herbs, spices, essential and carrier oils that address specific hair needs, yet have multiple uses. I developed it to a point where, with regular use, I noticed a significant difference in my hair health and the time it took to grow. I had my friends use it and they loved it as well.

Inspiration

Nature, simplicity, and the pursuit of personal growth, inner peace and well being. These concepts have influenced the essence of my products, from the ingredients to the effects of each individual treatments.

Social Impact

The ingredients used to create this product are vegetarian or vegan and made with no harm to animals. We also support Black and minority owned businesses as partners, consumers and suppliers.

Creative Process

I often find myself thinking about my own extremely thick, curly, multi textured hair and wondering how to make it more manageable and healthy without compromising its natural beauty. I review my hair care process, as well as the hair care processes of my friends, and those of other cultures. I try to work out what could benefit all of us, and supplement our self care routines no matter who we are, what we look like, or what our hair needs. With all of that in consideration, I create my products with the goal of using simple ingredients that work together to create natural and amazing results for every hair/skin type and texture.

I refer to a chart that I curated over a number of years that lists a plethora of herbs, other plants and flowers, and their medicinal and cosmetic benefits and properties. Based on this information, I create blends that address major hair concerns experienced across all demographics.

An Intersectional Being

I am Black and identify as a Woman. I grew up in a mostly white town and went to mostly white schools growing up. However, I also grew up in one of the most diverse regions of the United States. Because of this, I have gone through several identity revelations, connecting to my ancestral roots, being deeply immersed in other cultures, while still living in a place and developing loving relationships with people who look nothing like me and who, a large percentage of the time, had no idea what it was like to be in my shoes.  The challenge of understanding oneself and reaching self actualization requires quite a bit of conflict, yet in that conflict we grow. Learning to embrace my Blackness an a predominantly white environment was a journey, and a journey I will forever be grateful for.

This complex upbringing and life experience has taught me a lot and has made me proud to be a Black woman, and was gifted me with a rainbow of family and friends who have taught me so much about life, the beauty and complexity of our world.
