Artist: Emanuella

Artist & Entrepreneur

I’ve always been an artsy personality - when I was in middle school I used to draw sharpie designs on wooden #2 pencils and sell them in the lunchroom. You could also say that my entrepreneurial roots were planted at around the same time. However, I think I really started considering my art as more than “doodles” or “a pastime” when the creative process became intertwined with my own journey of emotional growth on the path to unconditional self-love. I realized that my unique style was something special, and a reflection of the greater contribution my existence can provide to this life. Being an artist allows me the daily challenge of seeing things from multiple perspectives, and reminds me constantly of the freedom in fluidity and creativity.

I’ve done a number of art showcases in both Chicago and San Francisco (where I’m currently based), displaying and selling everything from stickers to notebooks to screen printed bags! I’m currently selling affordable art prints and custom notebooks as I create them, and hope to branch out into more products post COVID.

Natural Connection

I’m inspired by womxn and nature primarily! I love the variance in how our bodies mold, grow, and change throughout our lives - almost mimicking the blooming of plants in nature. We are bold and beautiful, yet still vulnerable to outside stimuli affecting our ability to flourish.

That’s why I like to intertwine flora into my illustrations - there’s a natural connection!

About the Artist

Inspiration

I’m inspired by womxn and nature primarily! I love the variance in how our bodies mold, grow, and change throughout our lives- almost mimicking the blooming of plants in nature. We are bold and beautiful, yet still vulnerable to outside stimuli effecting our ability to flourish. That’s why I like to intertwine flora into most of my illustrations- there’s a natural connection!

In addition, nothing makes me happier than seeing womxn feel represented for who they are, and not being inhibited by the “limitations” dictated by Eurocentric or Western standards of beauty. Life is a lot less scary when you realize you are your own worst critic, and other people only have as much say in your self worth as you allow them to. Dance, and don't care if you jiggle! Lay in the sun at the beach and let every bit of cellulite be kissed by its rays. Fall in love with yourself as eagerly as you fall for someone else!

Everyday womxn - my friends, my family, strangers on the street - THESE are the womxn who inspire me. Just by existing and making boss moves in their own lane, regardless of the hurdles they have to overcome.

Social Impact

I think my art helps disrupt archaic ideals of who deserves to be represented as art, and what types of bodies can be given space in artistic depictions. I think the most powerful impact to come from my art is giving womxn a sense of empowerment. One of the biggest movements we’re constantly advocating for is womxn having autonomy over their bodies, their rights, and their self worth. I would hope that my illustrations can help contribute to that!

An Intersectional Being

As a fat, black, bisexual woman I feel like every part of my identity is often overly scrutinized, overly policed, and underrepresented. I want my art to showcase womxm in rare form - just basking in their own glow without needing to be anything but themselves.
